FAQ

If you don't find the answer to your question here, please drop us an e-mail at photoshow@houstonist.com and we'll be happy to get you the information you need. No question is too small. Seriously, ask us anything.

What are your framing specs? Can I frame my photo myself?
We'll release details when we notify the photographers whose work will appear in the show, but basically, we will ask that photos be framed using white, acid-free foam core backing, a 2-inch visible white acid-free mat on all sides, and matte black metal moulding. If you have experience framing and can meet those requirements, yes, you may do your own framing.

Why are you limiting us to three print sizes?
Though we would love to put everyone's work in the show, we're limited by the amount of wall space available to us in the gallery. We want to be sure to include as many photographers' works in the show as we can, so we ask that you stick with the three print sizes to help us maximize the space available.

Does it matter if my photos are B&W or color?
Nope.

Do my photos have to have been taken inside the Houston city limits?
No. As long as they were taken in the Houston area, they'll be fine.

Will I be able to set my own price for my photo?
No. We will set up pricing guidelines based on the print size. We do understand that some of you will be professional photographers who can set a higher price for your work, but this will also likely be the first time some of you have ever had your work shown in a gallery. Because of that, we're leveling the playing field by setting pricing standards for everyone. Rest assured that if your photo sells, the price will more than make up for your expenses.

Does Houstonist claim any rights to use my photos for any other purpose than display in the show?
Once the jury makes its selections, we will pick a few photos to use in marketing the show (with the photographers' permission, of course). But simply entering the show does not give Houstonist any rights other than to display your photo(s) in the show if they are selected by the jury.

Can a photographer have more than one photo in the show?
Yes, it could happen. The jurors won't know whose photos they are looking at — they'll be judging based on the photo itself — so it is possible that a single photographer could end up with more than one photo in the show.

Who's handling sales? Does the gallery take a cut?

MSquared Gallery will handle all sales and will take a 30 percent commission on each sale.

What if more than one person wants to buy my photo?
Great! The gallery will notify you and it'll be up to you to have additional prints made and framed.

Where does my entry fee go?
It all goes back into the show for general expenses: marketing, the opening reception and incidental costs.
