| FAQ If you don't find the answer to your question here, please drop us an e-mail at photoshow@houstonist.com and we'll be happy to get you the information you need. No question is too small. Seriously, ask us anything. Is this show only open to professional photographers? Definitely not. The show is open to everyone, no matter your experience level. Because the jury process is anonymous, every photo selected to appear in the show will be picked based on how good it is, not on who took it. What are your framing specs? Can I frame my photo myself? We'll release details when we notify the photographers whose work will appear in the show, but basically, we will ask that photos be framed using white, acid-free foam core backing, a 2-inch visible white acid-free mat on all sides, and matte black metal moulding. If you have experience framing and can meet those requirements, yes, you may do your own framing — but we have worked out a deal with a local framer who will frame your work to our specifications and give you an excellent deal in the process. In our experience, that's by far the easiest way to go. Does it matter if my photos are B&W or color? Absolutely not. I am interested in participating but do not want to sell my work. Is it possible to participate and not have to sell my work? For sure. Photographers whose work is selected for the show will have the option of whether to offer their prints for sale or not. Do my photos have to have been taken inside the Houston city limits? No. As long as they were taken in the Houston area, they'll be fine. Am I responsible for getting my photo printed if it is picked to be in the show? Yes. We recommend getting your prints professionally done — we can suggest a printer if you don't have one that you prefer — and we recommend printing on matte paper, because it views better when framed and under glass. Will I be able to set my own price for my photo? No. We will set up pricing guidelines based on the print size. We do understand that some of you are professional photographers who can set a higher price for your work, but this will also likely be the first time some of you have ever had your work shown in a gallery. Because of that, we're leveling the playing field by setting pricing standards for everyone. Rest assured that if your photo sells, the price will more than make up for your expenses. Does Houstonist claim any rights to use my photos for any other purpose than display in the show? Once the jury makes its selections, we will pick a few photos to use in marketing the show (with the photographers' permission, of course). But simply entering the show does not give Houstonist any rights other than to display your photo(s) in the show if they are selected by the jury — you retain full copyright to and ownership of your photo. Can a photographer have more than one photo in the show? Yes, it could happen. The jurors won't know whose photos they are looking at — they'll be judging based on the photo itself — so it is possible that a single photographer could end up with more than one photo in the show. Where does my entry fee go? It all goes back into the show for general expenses: marketing, the opening reception and incidental costs. What if I'm out of town on the 27th, when photographers are notified that their work will be in the show? No problem — our first line of communication will be by e-mail, so be sure and check your mail that day for notification. If we can't reach you by e-mail, we'll try phone next. |
